
You were born knowing how to breathe. That much is true, but the way you breathe today, the rate, the rhythm, the muscles you use, the pattern that kicks in when you’re stressed, anxious, or in pain, that is something you learned.
This distinction matters more than most people realize, and it is the foundation of everything we do at Breath Optimization.
Breathing Is Automatic, But That Doesn’t Mean It’s Fixed
Breathing sits in an unusual position in the body. Unlike your heartbeat, which runs on a fully automatic system, breathing is regulated by two overlapping pathways: one involuntary (your brainstem keeps you breathing while you sleep), and one that responds directly to experience, emotion, attention, and habit.
That second pathway is where breathing behaviour lives.
Over time, the way we breathe adapts to our environment, our stress levels, our posture, our emotional patterns, and our physiology. Someone who spends years in a high-stress role develops a different resting breathing pattern than someone who does not. Someone with a history of anxiety breathes differently than someone without one. Someone who has learned to suppress emotion, or to push through discomfort, or to stay vigilant, their breathing reflects that, in measurable, observable ways.
These patterns are not character flaws, they’re adaptations. The body is doing exactly what it learned to do. The problem is that many of these adaptations come with a cost.
What Dysfunctional Breathing Actually Looks Like
Dysfunctional breathing does not always mean gasping or obvious breathlessness. In many people, it’s far more subtle, and far more persistent.
It might look like chronic upper-chest breathing, where the diaphragm is underused and the accessory muscles of the neck and shoulders are doing the work instead. It might look like a slightly elevated breathing rate that never fully settles, even at rest. It might be the habit of sighing frequently, or holding the breath under pressure, or mouth breathing throughout the day.
What these patterns share is their effect on respiratory chemistry, specifically on carbon dioxide (CO₂) regulation.
CO₂ is not simply a waste gas to be exhaled as quickly as possible. It plays an active role in regulating blood pH, delivering oxygen to tissues, and maintaining a stable internal environment. When breathing patterns chronically disturb this balance, even mildly, the downstream effects can include anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, disrupted sleep, chronic tension, and a nervous system that struggles to settle.
The symptoms are real. The breathing pattern driving them is also real, and it can be identified, understood, and retrained.
Why Behaviour Analysis Is Different From Breathwork
When most people hear “breathing practice,” they think of techniques: box breathing, diaphragmatic breathing drills, slow breathing exercises. These have their place. But they are responses, not investigations.
Breathing Behaviour Analysis starts with a different question: not “how should you breathe?” but “how are you breathing, and why?”
Using capnometry (a biofeedback tool that measures CO₂ levels in real time via exhaled breath), HRV monitoring, and oximetry, we assess what your breathing is actually doing during rest, movement, conversation, and stress. We look at rate, rhythm, mechanics, and chemistry together.
This gives us an objective picture, not a guess, and not self-perception. From there, we can identify not only which patterns are present, but what is sustaining them: the triggers, the contexts, the habits and reinforcements that keep a dysfunctional pattern in place even when the person is motivated to change.
This is what makes the behaviour analysis model distinct. Mechanics matter, but behaviour is what determines whether change is lasting.
What Changes When You Understand the Why
Clients who come to us having tried other approaches, whether breathing exercises, therapy, medication, or lifestyle changes, often share a common experience: short-term relief that doesn’t hold. The pattern returns under pressure, in relationships, in the middle of the night.
That is not a failure of effort or willpower. It is what happens when the underlying behaviour has not been addressed.
When we identify the specific pattern, trace it to its triggers, and use evidence-based techniques including desensitization, counterconditioning, and somatics to build new habits at the behavioural level, the results are more sustainable. Not because we have taught a technique, but because we gently guided the body back to its reflexive breath, in turn allowing it to self-regulate.
The goal is not a breathing practice you remember to do. The goal is a breathing system that reorganizes itself, one that responds appropriately to stress, recovers efficiently, and no longer requires constant conscious management.

The assessment process begins with a 90-minute session using our biofeedback tools to establish a clear baseline of your breathing patterns and chemistry. We also look at breathing mechanics through a smoatic/interoceptive lens. From there, we build a personalized retraining plan that addresses your specific patterns and the contexts in which they appear.
Sessions are available in-person across southern Vancouver Island and around the world online with a CapnoTrainer GO rental. Rental are available to all clients allowing them to log into the biofeedback data software to practice between sessions.
